Koh Sangdyke School, Stung District, Kampong Thom Province. Completed August 2011

We're absolutely delighted to report that our second school project located in Koh Sangdyke village is finished. With six new classrooms and facilities, up to 800 children from the surrounding community now attend. We still have one finishing touch to add... At the request of the pupils themselves we've agreed to install some swings.

Here are some photos taken during our visit to the new school in late January 2012

Koh Sangdyke lies down a long, bumpy dirt track about an hour from the provincial capital. It actually had a small school with three classrooms. But there were so many children in the surrounding villages that only the lucky ones got to attend. These pupils were squashed into classes of 50+ with little regard for age or ability. In autumn 2010 parents and village elders asked if we could help by adding some more classrooms to the existing structure. As there was plenty of land on the site it was agreed we should construct two new three-classroom blocks, one on either side of the original building. The Cambodian Ministry of Education agreed to supply six additional teachers plus a couple of teaching assistants to meet the needs of the expanded school.

On arrival we were greeted by quite a line-up..

This is the headmaster, Mr Meuy Sambath. He told us the children had asked him for "wings". Fortunately they didn't mean a private jet - but SWINGS for the playground!
No shoes allowed in the classroom..
