Thoeun Sergeant was born in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia in January 1991 to a poor rural family. He spent his early years in an orphanage before being adopted at six-and-a-half. Initially speaking only Khmer, he moved with his new family to Singapore and then to Sydney, Australia before finally settling in the UK. Despite a difficult start in life Thoeun caught up with his peers and went on to gain seven GCSE A-C grades at High School. He played the piano, was an excellent photographer and an intrepid skier. Friends joked that he would one day represent Cambodia in the men's downhill! Thoeun was creative, sensitive and kind - a popular young man with a bright future who said he wanted a career that would "help people". He was 17 and studying for A levels in Music, History and English Literature at a sixth form college when he died.
